Levels of urinary leakage

Urinary leaks can affect anyone at any stage of their life so if you are feeling embarrassed or ashamed, stop that right now. It can range from a small bother to a large problem that can have a huge impact on your daily life. It can affect all manner of things that we may have previously taken for granted such as being able to comfortably wear a swimming costume, jump on a bouncy castle, go for a run and can massively dent your sexual confidence. It can also have a detrimental impact on social wellbeing and your personal relationships, as you purposely avoid certain activies and outings.

In extreme cases you may suffer from leaks without warning, day or night, or it may be situation specific and only occur when you exercise, laugh, cough or sneeze. The amount of wee that you pass will also vary from person to person from an unnoticeable damp patch to a significant leak that reaches the outer layer of clothing. Regardless of the severity of the condition, one thing that is commonplace is the embarrassment that most women and men suffer.

You may wish to consult a health professional about the problem. If this is the case questions that you need to consider and may be asked are:

  • How and when do you leak? Is it only situation specific such as when you are exercising or when you sneeze, cough or laugh? Does it happen every time or only on occasion? Or do you experience involuntary urination without warning?
  • How often to you empty your bladder? Do you find yourself feeling a sudden urge to go to the toilet or perhaps you go frequently to empty your bladder to avoid little accidents. Do you go to the toilet during the night and how often?
  • How much urine do you leak? Do you notice when it occurs, do you use panty liners to treat the symptoms or have you experienced urinary incontinence that has leaked through to your outer garment?

If you leak urine when you cough, sneeze or while exercising and lifting heavy objects, you could be suffering from Stress Urinary Incontinence. Some women and men often experience a sudden and urgent desire to pass urine, even while sleeping and sometimes leak on the way to the toilet. This is referred to as Urge Urinary Incontinence.

There are many ways to cope with bladder weakness and the most effective way depends on the level of urinary leaks; using panty liners for the occasional laugh and leak situation, through to surgery for extreme cases of involuntary urination. For most, strengthening your pelvic floor can prevent leaks once and for all.
